Last fall on 29 October, Thai AirAsia X, a joint venture of AirAsia X from Malaysia and Thai AirAsia. resumed its popular Bangkok–Sapporo service at 52 flights per year.

These additions of medium-haul economy flights come as Japan continues to experience a strong rebound of tourism following its normalisation of borders in October 2022.

Japan saw a record number of inbound visitors for the month of December in 2023 and January 2024 inbound numbers matched January 2019.
