Yokohama-based List Development has announced that it is developing a farm in Niseko, to be supported by nearby List Development villa sales.

A List Development 5 March press release said LIST FARM is being established on 4.7ha of now-mostly abandoned farmland in Kabayama, adjacent to Hirafu.

The farmland was acquired at the end of last year, in addition to a separate 6.53ha property in Hirafu east of the resort area on which 20 villas will be constructed.

LIST FARM will grow pumpkins, potatoes, corn, and asparagus among other crops and the decision to establish it was made, according to List, as part of its corporate philosophy of using real estate to revitalise local communities.

After consulting with residents, List said it learned that despite the vibrancy of the Niseko resort, the local farming population is rapidly ageing, leading to abandoned fields and a migration of local young people from the area.

List believes its LIST FARM, established with a villa-sale funding model, will attract Japanese residents and farmers to the area, enriching the local community.

The farm is due to start operations this April, and its produce will be sold locally as well as to List Development for distribution in the Tokyo area to List Development residents and business partners.

Last June List Development made a donation to Kutchan Town to be used in cooperation with regional Destination Management Organizations to further develop the resort area into an all seasons, sustainable destination.

List Development was founded in 1991. In 2010 it became the exclusive Japanese business partner for Sotheby’s International Realty.
