NISEKO NEWS
By Thomas Shomaker
A little bit of old Japan has come to Niseko.
Starting on 16 February, nine high-quality replicas of Edo Era Woodblock prints in the famous ukiyo-e style will be displayed at the Arishima Memorial Museum in Niseko as a special pop-up exhibition that will run till mid-March.
The exhibition is sponsored by Nitori Cultural Foundation and is part of a larger display currently at Otaru’s Otaru Art Base, a complex of four museums housed in historic Otaru buildings, which was opened by Hokkaido’s Nitori Company in 2016.
As reported by The Hokkaido Shimbun from the pop-up’s earlier iteration at Kutchan’s Camp & Go, the exhibition includes three of Hokusai’s famous “36 Views of Mt. Fujii” series as well as replicas of Hiroshige and Utamaro.
The explanation panels for the prints include both English and Japanese write-ups.
The Arishima Memorial Museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 9am – 5pm.
