Season’s First Two Watermelons Sell For ¥350,000 ($2500)

NISEKO NEWS

The harvest of the specialty watermelon of Kyowa Town, known as “Raiden Suika”, started on the 11th.

The first auction for the fruit this year was held in Sapporo on the 12th, and a box of two top-quality watermelons were sold for JPY350,000(US$2498), the highest price ever recorded for the brand.

Blessed by good weather in the end of April, the fruit is bigger than the average year and sweet to the edge of the skin, according to a local farmer.

“Raiden Suika” is a watermelon grown in Kyowa Town, a town right next to Kutchan Town, and is renowned for its sweet flavor, juiciness and its slushy-crunchy texture.
