At a Kutchan Town assembly on 19 June, Mayor Kazushi Monji announced plans to propose a tax on vacation homes in the next fiscal year.

As recent real estate developments have influenced the town’s infrastructure expenditures, Kutchan assembled a project team in 2021 to consider new taxes, which looked at similar “Villa Taxes” already in place in some Japanese cities.

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications also provided some guidance.

Mayor Monji said the new tax proposal, which will include the vacation home tax as well as others, will be finalised in the fall, following more input from experts and briefings for taxpayers.
