The Japanese government has announced that it intends to ease landing regulations for private jets in a bid to attract more high-net worth visitors.

Although very wealthy tourists made up just less than 1% of foreign visitors to Japan in 2019, they accounted for over 11% of tourist revenue.

Currently, a foreign private jet must provide at least 10 days notice before arrival, but this is to be reduced to just three days.

As private jets are usually used by the ultra-rich for increased convenience, this change is anticipated to allow them more flexibility in their travel choices, making spur-of-the-moment trips possible.

Japan had nearly 6,000 arrivals and departures of overseas private jets in 2019, almost double the number from five years earlier.

2020 and 2021’s numbers were drastically curtailed due to COVID, but 2022 rebounded to over 3,000 even though the country didn’t fully open to visitors till October.

But private jet entry isn’t the only way Japan is trying to entice the international elite – the government is planning to also work with local ports so they can meet the needs of superyachts.

This means, among other infrastructure enhancements, the development of larger berthing facilities and greater amenities in the port areas.

With these efforts for both land and air, Japan is attempting to compete with other nearby luxury destinations like Singapore.

These measures are in service of Japan’s goal of achieving tourist revenue of 5 trillion yen ($35.5 billion) during fiscal year 2023.
