In response to increased demand, Japan Airlines (JAL) announced that it is adding more international flights this winter.

The largest increase, from three to five flights per week, is on the Narita – Hong Kong route, reflecting the continued demand from Chinese visitors following the end of both Japan and China’s Covid restrictions.

Other international updates include the Kansai – Los Angeles route and the Kansai – Honolulu route, each from four to five flights per week, as well as the Nagoya – Honolulu route, from three to four flights per week.

The Haneda – New York route, while not having flights added, will see the new flagship A350-1000 aircraft begin operating in late November.

With the A350-1000’s capacity of 350-410 passengers in a standard three-class configuration, Tokyo can expect to see more inbound New Yorkers this winter.

JAL Domestic flights are also due to increase, including the addition of a route between the Sapporo Okadama Airport and Nemuro Nakashibetsu Airport in northeastern Hokkaido, which will have its inaugural flight on 22 October.

JAL cited the weak yen as one reason for the sustained inbound demand.

Considering the routes into Japan, another reason is presumably the increasing international recognition of Japan as a winter destination.

And more flight additions are possible as JAL emphasised that certain routes are still being adjusted and a comprehensive update is forthcoming.
