The number of hotel guests in Japan during June, including both Japanese and foreign users, has surpassed pre-COVID levels for the first time.
Preliminary data from the Japan Tourist Agency reveals that there were approximately 46.3 million guests in June, marking a 1% increase compared to the same month in 2019.
The number of Japanese guests were 36.8 million, showing a 1.7% growth from 2019, and 10.6% rise from the previous year.
However, the room occupancy rate stood at 54.2%, which is still 6.4 percentage points lower than in 2019.
In May, Japan lifted the pandemic restrictions and downgraded COVID’s classification to the same level as a seasonal flu, which has had an impact on the tourist numbers.
