An Organics Store In Kutchan Thrives With Western Touches

Pyram Organics & Plants is an organic food store next to Kutchan Station that sells its goods in some distinctly not-Japanese ways.

Pyram, which just celebrated its fourth anniversary, primarily sells its products by weight, a method that is familiar to many western shoppers who may frequent stores like the American organics chain Whole Foods, but is novel in Japan.

Customers are also asked to bring their own containers, part of a larger effort by Pyram to reduce the excessive packaging that Japan is often infamous for.

Owner Maki Konagai, in an interview with The Hokkaido Shimbun, said that his store sells over 300 products and has a goal of being a zero-waste shop.

Konagai san also told The Hokkaido Shimbun that the store’s customer base is growing, among both foreigners who are increasingly discovering it and Japanese shoppers who are becoming more aware of the benefits of organic products.
