The Bullet Train Extension In Hokkaido Will Be Delayed

The Hokkaido Shinkansen (bullet train) extension will be postponed beyond its previously planned spring of 2031 opening.

The over 200km extension, from where the Shinkansen currently terminates in the city of Hakodate to Sapporo, has faced labour shortages and construction challenges including a massive boulder which delayed progress on the Yotei Tunnel between Niseko and Kutchan Town.

The extension was approved in 2012, with a projected cost of JPY1.67 trillion (US$11.21 billion), but that has since ballooned to an estimated JPY2.32 trillion (US$15.57 billion) due to a sharp rise in material costs.
