Sapporo is reportedly going to change its Winter Olympics bid from 2030 to 2034.

Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto is to meet today, Wednesday 10 October, with the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) to propose that the city’s bid be for the 2034 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, or later.

The Japan Times first reported this upcoming meeting last Friday.

While delaying the bid had previously been discussed, today’s meeting marks the first time it becomes an official position.

The JOC has previously said it would support Sapporo if the bid changes to 2034 or a later Winter Olympics year.

In early 2022, polling by Sapporo City showed a slight majority of residents supporting a 2030 Olympic bid.

But as news of bid-rigging scandals around the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – held in 2021 – came to light later in 2022, polls showed eroding support among Sapporo residents for hosting the Olympics, and the opposition soon became a clear majority.

The host of the 2030 Olympic Games is expected to be announced by The International Olympic Committee by the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
