On 6 August, the 12th Niseko Hanazono Hill Climb was held over a 13.9km course, attracting over 500 participants.

The contestants were divided into 16 cohorts by age and gender, which in turn took on the course’s 610m rise in elevation.

The sponsor, again, was Hokkaido Events, which also sponsors the Niseko Classic and Niseko Gravel cycling events.

The men’s elite race was won by Shota Shimano who finished in 32 minutes and three seconds.

The first Niseko Hanazono Hill Climb took place in 2010 and the course has become known for the gentle slope of its first half compared to the steep ascent of the second.

The race takes place during the Kutchan Potato festival, which participants and spectators can join after the event.

Niseko Hanazono Hill Climb was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, but returned in 2022.
