Setsu Set To Redefine Hirafu Condo Style

Foundation works are underway on Niseko’s largest condominium development to date, Setsu Niseko.

The building will undoubtedly change the face of Hirafu, and shift the village’s centre of balance eastwards in regards to both its size and the retail, hospitality and activity it will bring to the precinct.

As well as its scale, the project – by influential Singaporean developer SC Global – promises to bring the most dynamic condominium form in the resort to date.

With an aim to depart from the compacted footprint of many existing condominiums, architect Mok Wei Wei designed Setsu to place a perimeter block around the site, which created a central open-to-the-sky courtyard.

The format aims to decentralise the apartments and other spaces, while creating a dynamic space brought to life with trees, terraced landscapes of seasonal blooms, and water-features that capture the changing seasons and include a series of outdoor cabanas complete with fireplace for the winter months.

SC Global founder and chairman Simon Cheong’s vision is integral to the design.

On a ski holiday several years ago, a knee injury kept him off the mountain while his family skied, during which time he gained a more intimate knowledge of the village.

He started thinking about a project that could add vibrance to Hirafu, and set his sights on the current lot.

As well as adding life and amenity to the precinct, he wanted Setsu Niseko guests to feel as though they were connected to their location.

The design of the apartments “embraces the purity and understated elegance of Japanese design, and makes the most of the views of the two mountains it is flanked by”.

The building is scheduled for completion for winter 2021.
