The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has put forward its recommendations for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games, and Sapporo isn’t on the list.

The announcement by the IOC’s Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games came on 29 November in Paris and today the IOC’s executive board invited the French National Olympic Committee and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee for “Targeted Dialogues” towards hosting the 2030 Games in the French Alps and the 2034 Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sapporo had previously dropped its bid for 2030 but was still exploring options for hosting the 2034 Games when the announcement was made, a blow to Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto who had been a strong advocate of bringing the Olympics to his city.

When Sapporo first began considering hosting the 2030 Games, polling indicated that public support was fairly high, but this fell precipitously when the bid-rigging scandals around the 2020 Tokyo Games came to light.

One of the reasons the IOC cited in its recommendations for 2030 and 2034 is the strong public support for the games in the French Alps and Salt Lake City.

Niseko Village was the planned site of the Alpine Skiing events, including the Downhill, Super G, and Slalom competitions, should a Sapporo Olympic bid have been successful.
