Residents Call For A Hirafu Police Station

NISEKO NEWS

At a 7 May meeting of the Shiribeshi Development Association, participants called for a permanent police station in Hirafu.

The meeting took place in a Kutchan Town hotel and was attended by the mayors and officials of 20 Shiribeshi Subprefecture municipalities and about 100 concerned citizens.

According to The Hokkaido Shimbun, other requests, which will all be submitted to the Hokkaido prefectural government and the relevant Tokyo national ministries in June, include speeding up the openings of both the Hokkaido Shinkansen (bullet train) expansion between Sapporo and Hakodate and the Trans-Hokkaido Expressway between Yoichi and Kutchan.

The opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen expansion, while still listed as March 2031 on the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology website, is widely expected to be delayed due to construction difficulties and labour shortages.

Currently the police presence in Hirafu is based at a temporary Kōban (police box) which is only open during the winter season.
