Kutchan police traffic statistics reported by the Hokkaido Shinbun show that more that there were 116 traffic accidents involving foreigners in December.
A total of 32% of 358 accidents in the area involved foreigners, and police said accidents involving foreigners often occur in areas around ski resorts.
They said many were single-vehicle accidents, including collisions with guardrails and snow walls, and running off the road.
Police attribute the accidents to visitors unfamiliar with the basics of driving on winter roads, such as avoiding sudden acceleration, braking and steering.
In future, they plan to call for safe driving through local rental car companies.
The reported statistics also showed accidents in December last year where foreigners were the main parties involved increased by 71% from the same month the previous year – the increase obviously attributed to the increase in visitors following COVID border restrictions easing.
