The four major resorts in Niseko all saw tourism numbers this past winter season exceed the years directly preceding Covid.

According to reporting by The Hokkaido Shimbun, numbers across the board were up 26% compared to the 2022/23 winter season.

Part of the increase was due to swelling numbers of visitors from North America, a trend that began to emerge during the 2022/23 season, as well as strong numbers of Australians, South Koreas, Singaporeans and other mainstay Niseko visitors.

These inbound guests were more than enough to offset depressed numbers from mainland China and much of Europe.

Niseko’s strong inbound numbers are reflective of Japan on the whole, which saw record numbers of monthly visitors for this past December and February, and January numbers matching 2019.
