2,788,000 foreign tourists came to Japan in February of 2024, a record-breaking number for that month.

The data, released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on 19 March, show that February 2024 saw a 7.1% increase in inbound numbers from February 2019, the previous record holder and the last February before the onset of Covid.

2024’s record-setting February follows a busy January in which arrivals were a statistical tie with January 2019 and a record-setting December 2023.

In terms of visitor demographics, 19 of 23 major markets (countries) saw record highs for the month of February including the United States, Singapore, Australia and Germany.

Out of that group, Taiwanese and Vietnamese arrivals were record highs for any single month.

February 2024’s figures were also 89% higher than February of 2023, the first February after Japan’s borders were normalised in October of 2022.
