Niigata Prefecture sake production may be coming to Niseko.

On 27 April the president of Niigata Prefecture’s Hakkaisan Sake Brewery, Jiro Nagumo, was visiting Annupuri’s whiskey-producing Niseko Distillery, when he mentioned strengthening sake production in Niseko.

The event was a meeting of the Hokkaido Association of Small Business Entrepreneurs and was attended by around 20 members.

Nagumo san said he is experimenting with sake produced with sake rice from Niseko, adding that the water quality was similar to Niigata.

In mentioning possible Niseko sake production, he spoke of being able to sell such sake overseas, which Chinese regulations imposed after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear accident have made difficult for Niigata Prefecture products.

Hakkaisan Brewery was founded in 1925 in Niigata Prefecture.
