Kutchan’s lodging tax brought in a record high of over JPY400 million (US$2,637,200) in revenue during fiscal year 2023.
The lodging tax was introduced in November of 2019 and as The Hokkaido Shimbun reported, at a flat rate of 2% is unique among other lodging taxes in the area, which usually are tiered flat-rate systems.
The revenue target for the lodging tax was set at JPY300 million (US$1,977,750) when it was introduced.
In fiscal year 2022, which was partially impacted by Japan Covid-era travel restrictions which ended in October of that year, the lodging tax brought in JPY243 million (US$1,601,892) in revenue.
The Hokkaido government is currently considering a tiered, flat-rate, prefecture-wide lodging tax.
