Starting in fiscal 2024, Japan will double the amount of available foreign skilled worker visas.
The change will apply to those in the Specified Special Worker program and will bring the number of such available visas to 800,000 for a five-year period.
The Specified Special Worker program was begun in 2019 to attract foreign labourers with both Japanese language ability and specialised skills.
The previous cap of the program, applicable through the end of fiscal 2023 in March of this year, was 345,000 persons.
The move to expand the program is part of an effort by Japan to find more labour in an era of depopulation and an ageing workforce.
