A farm in Niseko is trying to grow cotton.

Although usually considered a warm-weather crop, Takahashi Dairy Farm – known for its milk-based sweets and cheesy pizza – is attempting cotton cultivation to produce towels as a specialty item.

According to the Hokkaido Shimbun, the Takahashi Dairy Farm farmers began the project last year and are growing the majority of their crop in the open, a rarity for Hokkaido where most if not all existing cotton cultivation is in greenhouses.

If successful, Takahashi Dairy Farm plans to use a company outside of Hokkaido for the spinning and then produce towels from the yarn with a company in Hokkaido. The final goal is to sell the towels to hotels in and outside of Niseko.

Cotton cultivation in Niseko follows a trend of specialty items being produced in town, from snowboards to award-winning spirits and craft beer.
