Yuzen means “with a calm air” – an apt name for this escape into nature. Inside Yuzen is gorgeous and inviting, with wood floors and ceilings creating a sense of warmth. Those ceilings are vaulted, and combine with full height windows to create truly panoramic forest views. Furniture and decoration is in neutral linen tones, with one or two pieces adding a splash of colour in each room.

Living in Yuzen is centered around the open-plan living area on the upper floor of the chalet. On one side is a living area with lavish sofa seating, circled around the feature gas fireplace. On the other is a dining area with a custom camphor wood table. In the center of it all is the kitchen, with an expansive U-shape counter and breakfast bar to bring everyone together. You and your party can just as easily come together in Yuzen, or spread out and do your own thing: with a separate media room for those who need screen time, or a tranquil traditional Japanese tatami room for those seeking quiet and contemplation. Dive in to Japanese culture and soak in the Japanese-style hot soaking tub. Or soak in the fresh air on the outdoor terrace, cleverly hidden from prying eyes with wood panels, while still letting you enjoy the views.

Functionally all you need is here for a great ski holiday: a dry room for gear storage, a full host of appliances in kitchen and laundry, even a covered garage with room for two cars. This is the epitome of Niseko living – architecturally stunning, lavish digs with epic views and all the functionality you need.

Yuzen
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Yuzen sits in Kabayama, otherwise known as St. Moritz, a delightful forested neighbourhood just around the corner from bustling Hirafu, Niseko’s main ski village. The chalet is surrounded by forests on one side and a quiet residential street on the other, and windows have been cleverly set to take full advantage of the woods behind. There are a few cafes and restaurants dotted around in Kabayama that are an easy walk, otherwise central Hirafu is a 15-minute walk up the road and free village shuttles stop nearby.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

The lifts are 1.8km from Yuzen’s front door. You can walk to Hirafu’s Family lift in about 15 minutes, although part of the walk is on a road without sidewalks, or take the free village shuttle from the St. Moritz shuttle stop. It’ll be easier to get in to Hirafu with a car at a quick 2-minute drive. You can get around at Yuzen without a car, but bringing one can help you choose your start point in Niseko based on the day’s conditions, or avoid Niseko’s crowds altogether and head for nearby Moiwa, Rusutsu or Kiroro.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Though mostly residential, Kabayama / St. Moritz is home to an increasing number of great little hidden gems. Green Saso is known for green tea and desserts, while Gentem Cafe doubles as a showroom for Niseko’s excellent Gentem snowboards. Try the restaurant downstairs in Elements Niseko for easy informal dining and a rotating selection of lunch specials, or head to La Villa Lupicia’s sought after restaurant for finer dining – the Lupicia deli housed in a separate building also offers some great culinary delights to take home.
