Hirafu’s Izumikyo is a pension village, once home to holiday houses and log cabins where Japanese holidaymakers would come to ski in the winter or barbecue in the summer. Sapphire Cottage is a perfect example of these log cabins. It oozes charm with its triangle roof, toasty warm wooden walls and lace curtained, wood frame windows.
Sapphire Cottage sits across two floors, with living, dining, one bedroom and bathroom downstairs and additional bedrooms upstairs. The second floor quite a bit smaller than the first to allow for an extra-roomy loft ceiling over the living area. One of the things to enjoy in a chalet like this is the cabin itself – with wood walls, floors and beams you can imagine yourself in a remote cabin in the snowy woods somewhere, 500 years ago. There’s a classic wood table with chairs for the dining area, and a cozy, well-worn sofas to curl up on making up the living area.
Despite the timeless alpine feel, Sapphire Cottage has its share of modern amenities: There is a sizeable kitchenette with stovetop and utensils, though no fridge. The shared bathroom has a Japanese-style unit bath, with bath and separate shower. Washstand and toilet are both separate for convenience, and there’s a washing machine on-site. There’s a flat-screen TV in the lounge as well – your life here won’t be TOO rustic. It’s a cute, simple chalet with a great location in East Hirafu’s Izumikyo that’s close to shuttles but far from the noise and bustle of central Hirafu. You can get to Niseko’s largest ski resort with ease, then come back to your tranquil log digs and enjoy the evening with your crew.

The first bedroom is located on the ground floor, just next to the kitchenette. Two guests can sleep here on western-style beds, set up as two single beds with a bedside table in between. This room is a little larger than the others, and as a corner room has windows on two sides of the room letting in natural light. The shared bathroom is downstairs and just across the hall, with a Japanese style unit bath and shower, washstand and a separate entry toilet for convenience.

The final bedroom in Sapphire Cottage uses the loft space at the peak of the cottage roof, to house two guests on futon beds. This room open to the rest of the cabin and is carpeted. There is a little space for storage, but it might be easier to use the extra room downstairs for your gear. Downstairs is also home to the shared bathroom with shower, bath and separate toilet.

Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Sapphire Cottage is located in Izumikyo 2, the holiday cottage neighbourhood in East Hirafu that stretches all the way to Midtown intersection. This area is home to a neat mix of fancy new chalets and traditional cabins and pensions. It is a residential neighbourhood, with regular shuttle services stopping by and a few choice restaurants available at the entrance. Choose Izumikyo for quaint lodge-lined streets that take you back to Niseko of yester-year.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
Hirafu’s ski lifts are a 30-minute walk, or a 4 minute drive from Sapphire Cottage. A free village shuttle stops nearby (about a 4 minute walk away), so many guests staying in the area will take the shuttle up in the morning and walk back in the afternoon. For freedom of movement and your choice of resorts each morning, a car just can’t be beat and Sapphire Cottage offers one parking spot in winter. Property Management will deliver you to your door and pick you up again on arrival and departure.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
There are several choice restaurants at the entrance of Izumikyo, about 10 minutes away by foot – Tsubara Tsubara offers the delicious Hokkaido specialty Soup Curry, while Graubunden has tasty and filling sandwiches and cakes. Should you wish to dive in to Hirafu’s buzzing nightlife scene, you can take a shuttle to central Hirafu and work your way around the many bars, then walk back at the end of the night. Convenience stores are about a 15-minute walk. For groceries, you’d best drive to Kutchan (about 15 minutes away).
