Hotel Villa Hakuba’s vibe is young and fun, with industrial cafe chic permeating every room. The hotel is a renovation of an older Japanese establishment, and the key to a successful refurbishment is in re-imagining the details. Hakuba Hotel Group (also behind The Happo hotel) does this wonderfully: Everything from polished wood and matte black metal fixtures to cushions and throw rugs to art prints and subtle room decor, reinforces the style.

For those that the basics, the hotel-style rooms can’t be beat with generously large and comfy western beds in a range of double, twin or family layouts. Or, for those that want to do some cooking and eating in during their stays, Hotel Villa Hakuba also offers a range of apartments, from two bedroom all the way to four. These rooms offer more in the self-catering department: galley kitchens, fridges, utensils and appliances. Besides full kitchens, each apartment has a living room suite with flat-screen TV and a dining table. Also part of the Hotel Villa Hakuba arsenal is the Sakka Apartment, which sits in its own building. And, some very cute loft cabins can be found on premises that make a great and cozy stay for two guests.

Shared facilities in the main building include a laundry room with washing machine and dryer, a ski storage & drying room, as well as the excellent Rabbit Hole – a fun eatery and bar that sees plenty of locals and events on-site throughout the season. Best of it all, Happo One’s Sakka ski slope is just around the corner – there’s nothing quite like rolling straight out of bed and onto the ski slope on a powder day, and Hotel Villa Hakuba makes that super easy.

Hotel Villa Hakuba
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Hotel Villa Hakuba is located in Upper Wadano, on the main street that connects Wadano to the rest of Happo Village. Upper Wadano is home to plenty of other lodges, cabins, chalets and small hotels, all hidden away on tree-lined streets. Equipment rentals are available in the neighbourhood, and a few eateries are also hidden away amongst the houses. Wadano is about a 20-minute walk from central Happo Village, where you’ll find the lion’s share of nightlife spots and restaurants. This is a great location for those that want to focus on the snow first, but is a little out of the way for dining and night life.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

The hotel is a stone’s throw (or about a 3-minute walk) away from Happo One’s Sakka ski slopes. Happo One is Hakuba Valley’s largest and most central ski resort. Shuttle buses stop regularly at the Sakka slope and at Wadano’s main street, connecting you with central Happo Village, Echoland and Happo’s many other bases. As Happo is partnered with Iwatake and Tsugaike, free shuttles from Sakka will get you to these slopes, too. To explore further afield, you’ll need to get to Happo Bus Terminal to access the Hakuba Valley buses that connect every ski hill in the valley.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Hotel Villa Hakuba is home to The Rabbit Hole, a cafe, bar and restaurant serving meals and drinks throughout the day, and also hosting live music and events throughout the season. Besides The Rabbit Hole, you’ll need to head down to Lower Wadano to find a choice of several restaurants – some in Hakuba Valley offer pick up and drop off services, and everything needs advance booking, so talk to your front desk staff. The nearest supermarket is near Hakuba Station, while Lawson convenience store is at the Happo Bus Terminal.

We truly enjoyed our stay here during New Years 2023. This accommodation has a lot to offer from being steps away from the slopes, a washer/dryer on site, to being steps away to rentals, a fancy restaurant and attached to The Rabbit Hole bar.
Our apartment style accommodation had 3 rooms, a kitchen and living room. It was great and more than enough for 6 of us. However, there are no stores nearby or any lobby to purchase miscellaneous items that you may have forgotten, so prepare to purchase those items before arriving or schedule to use their shuttle to head into town if at all possible.

Lots of great reviews for Hotel Villa Hakuba set the bar quite high. More like an hostel than a hotel. Rooms ranged from okay to very small. The bathrooms are tiny, quite a challenge for anyone over 6ft 2” as are the door frames. Fairly clean. Ski storage area is okay. Laundry facility is a washing machine and less than effective dryer in the ski store. The staff are helpful. Shuttle service is okay. Can walk to a couple of lifts. There are a couple of eating places close by, absolutely need to book all dinner locations including the in house Rabbit Hole. Grocery supplies are a shuttle ride away.

We were happy overall with our stay at Hotel Villa Hakuba. The location is excellent- ski-in/ski-out right next to the Sakka quad lift (you can see the lift from your bedroom window). The bed was large, super comfortable with a quality duvet and pillows. The adjoining restaurant The Rabbit Hole was amazing for breakfast, lunch and dinner (western food). The management was absolutely fantastic- they were responsive to our needs, solved a few minor problems efficiently and provided an excellent shuttle service to and from the bus terminal. The dry room downstairs was great for ski storage and there was a complimentary washer and dryer. The hotel itself was mediocre. The windows were poorly insulated and so the room felt cold (grateful for the cozy duvet!). The bathroom, which is a plastic cubicle, was tiny and the toilet seat was cold. BUT, because all the other aspects of our stay were so amazing (the location, restaurant and staff), we were willing to overlook these shortcomings and still had a great stay.

So it was a last minute decision to book this hotel because we weren’t sure if we actually wanted to go to Hakuba for our winter vacay. We would at least go to Hakuba more than once in a year but first time to stay here. It’s situated right where The Rabbit Hole restaurant is so you get a 10% off each time. The room was small but cozy and the bed was extremely comfortable, I ended up sleeping in on our first day. It had a good view of the piste from our window.

Hotel Villa Hakuba 3 bedroom apartments were amazing, the staff go out of their way to accomodate you with whatever you like, they booked us into a beautiful onsen up the road and picked us up from hakuba train station. The apartment is in such good location with the chairlifts at your back door, adventure park for the kids not even a 5 min walk. Not to mention the beautiful views from our bedroom and lounge windows. Rabbit hole bar and restaurant was only 30m from the apartment with amazing Australian tasting coffee and the best burgers I’ve ever had!

I would rebook this place in a heartbeat.

This hotel villa earned its reputation as a snow holiday destination. This was our third visit, we love this hotel so much. We had fun Skiing over the slopes, gathered a bunch of fist sized snows throwing each other for fun. Its the best ski in- ski out property. We had our amazing access to first runs because it is located less than a hundred meter from the Sakka lift on Happo one. Great accommodation that catered us even when we are in big group. Rooms were spacious, very clean and with complete amenities that made our stay more comfortable plus we got free laundry downstairs. The staff were nice and accommodating. They made sure no flaws on every detail. This hotel made our snow holiday meaningful and memorable. Recommended for all.

Had been here numerous times and we always leave the place happy and satisfied. It sure is a clean and comfortable place to stay in with modern amenities and is perfectly located close to nearby tourist spots especially the Ski resort, but, one of the very reason we keep coming back to this place are the people – very accommodating and friendly staff giving you an excellent customer experience. They also have good food! Always a lovely stay for us. Highly recommended.

I loved it. From the costumer service to the location everything was outstanding. I went with 7 of my family and friends and we didn’t only love our apartment but loved the convenience of the rabbit hole right downstairs. The receptionist was incredible and helped organise many thing such as bookings and the helpful shuttle bus. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.

Perfect location it’s near Sakka lift. It had free shuttle services as well to any other lifts and other places to visit in Hakuba. Great food in their in-house bar/restaurant, The Rabbit Hole. It also had a awesome view of the snowy mountain from the hotel itself.

Very modern and awesome hotel inviting leisure travelers who like refreshing, relaxing and snowy atmosphere. Close to Sakka Ski Slopes of Happo, a minute walk to ski lift and nearby fine dining establishments. The best place we had ever checked in. It has nice comfortable room – spacious and cozy, perfect for a very relaxed stay. Staff were very attentive and approachable. Ensures everything that made our stay more comfortable. Staying in this villa was a remarkably beautiful bond with my family. A magnificent stay indeed this winter season. Highly recommended for all.
