Architecturally, Zenrinso takes inspiration from the traditional Japanese homes of Niigata and Nagano with a bold, symmetrical roof line and dark stained wood exteriors. Stepping inside, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped inside a gallery. Cavernous ceilings and bold geometric lines define each space, while full-height windows frame the beautiful forest scenery outside. Key features are highlighted using spot and recessed lighting, and some extraordinary, bold art prints with Japanese themes adorn key wall spaces throughout the chalet. Zenrinso is quite the stylistic achievement.

This two-storey chalet isn’t shy on creature comforts: every bedroom has its own en suite bathroom for maximum comfort and convenience. Living is centered on the open-plan living, kitchen and dining area upstairs. The living room sofa suite faces an extra large feature gas fireplace, but if screens are more your thing, then the “cozy nook” is where you want to be. This neat, semi-secluded second seating area is closed in on three sides, with a large flat-screen TV at one end, creating a little media room that’s still a part of the bigger living space. It’s a great way of keeping all your guests in one place while still letting the living / dining area itself be a screen-free, communal gathering space.

Feature-wise you have a full host of appliances in both kitchen and laundry, with a separate ski storage dry room rounding out the must-have features for any ski lodge. Though the garage isn’t available to staying guests, the car port is, so the snow won’t be a problem for you in the mornings – an EV charging port is also an added bonus for those with electric cars.

Zenrinso
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Zenrinso sits at the end of a wooded side-street in the Wadano district, just a little uphill from Happo Village. This is a quiet, wooded neighbourhood with plenty of lodges, pensions and hotels lining the forested streets. Traditionally a home for more upmarket, exclusive accommodations, this area also has its own rental stores and a couple of restaurants dotted about.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

Happo One’s Sakka area is a 200 metre walk from the chalet, about 8 minutes by foot. Free village shuttles regularly service Wadano’s main street, and you can get to the nearest shuttle stop just outside Mominoki hotel with a 5-minute walk. Property management offers some shuttle services in to town for restaurants and groceries, depending on availability – but for true freedom to get around, we recommend bringing a car.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Wadano’s main road to Happo’s ski lifts is a 5-minute walk from Zenrinso, and offers a few options for dining – try Mansaku for shabu shabu, The Pub or Izakaya Kaz for apres drinks and food, all in the Mominoki neighbourhood. Both Happo Village and the Happo Gondola main street are a short drive away, and offer a wider range of restaurants, bars and nightlife spots. Also try the Happo Onsen hot spring for a traditional hot soak with excellent ski slope views.
