The castle is a cozy, sprawling former guest house that has been updated for modern tastes. The lodge layout means the house is optimised for communal living, with plenty of wide open spaces inviting everyone to socialise or chill in small groups doing their own thing. Former guest rooms upstairs also mean every bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom, most with a bath and shower – so nobody has to wait for the facilities.

The downstairs is centered around a spacious living and dining area, with a large cozy sofa and flat-screen TV next to a generous dining table. Next door is an industrial kitchen with galley service window and breakfast bar: plenty of tools and space for everyone to do their own thing, or for a couple of chefs in the group to serve the entire lodge. Speaking of cool communal living touches, the living room opens up onto two unique spaces: for those that want to chill, bond and relax, there is a neat little fireside sitting room with carpeted floor seating centered around a wood log fire stove. For those that would rather play together, the game room next door comes with its own pool table.

You’ll notice Japanese touches in the bedrooms upstairs, left from the original design. There’s wooden wall beams, sliding door closets and Japanese style ceiling lights in each room. Bedding is all western, with several rooms offering a few options for bedding to suit your group. It’s a chill, spacious lodge with plenty of space for everyone to spread out.

The Castle
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

The Castle sits on the edge of the neighbourhood, with nothing but forest and a river behind. The lodge also sits a fair bit back from the road, with a generous parking area giving you that extra bit of peace and quiet from the neighbours. Despite the quiet, The Castle is also just a four-minute walk from central Echoland, close to everything you need with restaurants, shops, rental locations and a shuttle service all an easy walk from your doorstep. Echoland is also central in the Hakuba Valley, and makes a great place to explore further afield.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

Echoland is a transport hub for the Hakuba Valley, with inter-resort shuttles traveling both north and south to every resort on the Hakuba Valley pass. The local village shuttle also stops here, and will take you for free to Happo’s ski slopes throughout the day. The shuttle stop is an 8-minute walk from The Castle. As property management helpfully offers to pick you up and drop you off on arrival and departure, you’ll be quite comfortable without a car. But should you choose to bring one, there’s free parking on site and Echoland is central to everything in the valley.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Just four minutes walk from The Castle you’ll find Echoland’s main street, home to some of Hakuba’s most beloved and well-established restuarants, bars and cafes. Not only is Echoland Hakuba’s entertainment hub, but it’s also home to a few choice equipment rental and retail stores, so most of what you need to ski is right at your doorstep. For groceries you’ll need to drive (or check with property management about grocery delivery options) – it’s a five minute drive to the nearest convenience or supermarket, with a few options for each in the area.
