Chalet Hakuba was built in the 1970s and it has been used as a lodge and boutique hotel over the years, before its new owners have undertaken a full renovation and converted it into one huge, modern ski chalet. The owners have spent plenty of time here with their own family and friends, and therefore have spent a huge amount of time and energy testing it out and making sure it has everything big groups with kids could need.
The modern makeover has retained the character and quirks of the original Japanese construction, with a focus on warm alpine style which sits beautifully well in its forest setting. Relax around the stone fireplace in one of the two living areas while snow falls outside at the end of a day on the mountain and the kids play downstairs – this is the life! In a large group there’s bound to be one masterchef who will love the full chef’s kitchen, but otherwise there are plenty of excellent restaurants and cafés within walking distance.
Entertainment is paramount here and the place has everything big kids and small could need to entertain themselves. However when it comes time to rest, there are 10 bedrooms which provide private sanctuaries to retreat to. The bedrooms are spread out over two floors and are the old compartmentalised hotel rooms converted into comfortable spaces complete with sitting areas and some with desks and ensuites. There is a Japanese-style bath on the lower level adding to the authentic traditional flavour.

Chalet Hakuba
Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Chalet Hakuba is located in the prestigious and beautiful Wadano Woods, which sits alongside Hakuba’s main resort and village Happo One. Surrounded by dense forest it’s just a few minutes drive to the centre of town but this little corner of the village has a nice variety of amenities within walking distance.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
Just 250m or several minutes stroll and you’re at the lifts and a kids snow play area at the base of the mountain. And actually if you’re really keen you can ski right back to the accommodation with just one road to cross (which may be covered in snow anyway). There is also a bus stop nearby with buses going in all directions if you need it.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
Chalet Hakuba is in our “Forest Retreats” collection, and the best part of that is you’re still close to the action. Once you head out of your street you’re on the main thoroughfare heading up to Upper Wadano, which has several great restaurants, cafés and bars. A few minutes by drive into Happo Village and you’ve got dozens more.
