Architecturally, this chalet offers more than your typical rectangle box. The second storey is shaped with walls that lean outward, creating a neat pentagonal shape upstairs that gives the whole lodge a sense of symmetry and an eyecatching, designer look. While Ahiru Chalet stands out on the outside, inside it’s the surrounding scenery that takes center stage – everywhere upstairs, full-height windows let the light pour in and surround you in Hakuba’s tranquil snowy scenery. You can enjoy forest and village views from the dining table, from the living room suite, from your private balcony and (a real rarity!) from the kitchen while you cook. Instead of looking at a dimly lit backsplash, you have a tall window set right above the kitchen counter to help inspire your next culinary masterpiece.

You’ll be toasty warm while you gaze at all that snow, as Ahiru Chalet has underfloor heating throughout with individual controllers in each room to help finetune each guest’s comfort. The kitchen and laundry both offer everything you need for extended living on-site, and a dedicated gear room downstairs makes storing and drying your gear a breeze. Ahiru Chalet has two floors, downstairs you’ll find the main guest bedrooms, dry room and a shared bathroom. Upstairs, tucked behind the living room is a small additional bedroom. Ahiru Chalet’s styling is modern yet simple, with no superfluous touches and a muted, neutral look that’ll let your own personality shine. Whether you’re here to chill or to entertain, to dive in to Hakuba’s deep powder snow or explore Misorano’s hidden gourmet scene, Ahiru Chalet will make an excellent home base.

Ahiru Chalet
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Ahiru Chalet sits just off the main road, right by the stream that unofficially separates Echoland from Misorano. Misorano is Hakuba’s traditional holiday home neighbourhood: a quiet, exclusive area where a mix of private chalets, pensions and houses are dispersed among natural woodland. Echoland’s main street is a short walk away, while Misorano’s growing gourmet scene is also on your doorstep. It is a quiet area a quick drive from several ski hills, that offers surprisingly good bus access to the whole Hakuba Valley.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

The free village shuttle stop is a two-minute walk from Ahiru Chalet. It connects you to Misorano, Echoland and Happo Village, as well as Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Happo One’s ski slopes. If you want to go further afield, a ten-minute walk will get you to Misorano Cultured, here both North and South-bound inter-resort shuttles can take you to any ski resort in the Hakuba Valley. If waiting for buses isn’t your thing, Ahiru Chalet offers free parking and having a car in Hakuba will put all of Goryu, Hakuba47, Happo-One, Iwatake and Tsugaike within a 15 minute drive of your front door.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Don’t sleep on Misorano – less well-known and crowded than neighbouring Echoland, Misorano is home to a growing list of formidable eateries hidden away in its leafy streets. This includes Sharockan (with a michelin-recognised chef presiding), Nikumasa steakhouse, Garlic Italian restaurant, and Mon Pigeon for sweets afterwards. Should you want more variety, Echoland’s main street is less than 10 minutes’ walk and offers at least two dozen options for food and drink. Groceries and convenience stores are about a 5-minute drive away from Ahiru Chalet.

We stayed with 8 people, 2 families, 4 adults and 4 children. The building is very new, and the spacious living room, dining room, and large windows are all extraordinary, and I was able to spend every day there feeling very elegant.

There are 4 bedrooms, all with toilets, and 3 baths and showers, making it very comfortable. One room has two bunk beds, so we used it as a children’s room.
The host was also very kind, carefully explaining the facilities and giving us information about nearby restaurants and hot springs.

I would definitely like to stay there again!
