Happo Apartments is a compact, three-storey building that sits on the main street leading to Happo One’s Adam Gondola. The ground floor is home to a small lobby area with adjacent communal laundry, and a ski storage room. Up the stairs (note, no elevator!) you’ll find just a handful of apartments in three and four-bedroom layouts.
Considering the prime location, each apartment offers a surprisingly generous central living area, and bedrooms leading off a central hallway. Styling is modern and funky, with a bit of an industrial flair – swanky leather sofas and a colourful centerpiece carpet offset the industrial steel in the kitchen, while indoor plants and woven chairs bring a sense of life and fun.
Your living room has a dining table with seating for all occupants, and a counter kitchen along one wall that offers all the basics needed, including a rangehood, microwave and full-size fridge. Each bedroom has western bedding, plush carpeted floors and a standalone shelf with hangers to offer a bit of storage. The bathrooms are in Japanese unit-bath style: some are in the compact toilet-sink-shower-bath combination you find in Japanese hotels, while others have a more spacious setup with bath and neighbouring shower. This close to the gondola, Happo Apartments are the perfect place for dedicated powder hounds to get their fix. The front desk in the lobby is staffed during the winter, and will be invaluable during your stay for recommendations, dinner reservations and shuttle services throughout town. Ski Rentals are available in the basement floor.

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Happo Apartments are aptly named – sitting just 2 minutes’ walk from the Happo One Gondola, the best and quickest lift access to Hakuba’s largest ski resort. Happo Apartments sit on the narrow main street that leads to the Happo One Gondola from Happo Village. This area is a little removed from the center of the village, but home to rental stores, hotels and restaurants of its own. Some public (day only) parking is available nearby. Following the road and river downhill will take you to central Happo Village – home of many restaurants, traditional shrines and local onsen hot springs.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
Walk two minutes uphill to reach Happo One’s Adam Gondola, and the Gondola bus stop. Free village shuttles from here will take you anywhere in Happo Village including Happo Bus Terminal, Wadano, Echoland, and Happo One’s many other bases. You’ll need to get to either Nakiyama or Happo Bus Terminal to access the Hakuba Valley bus, but Happo’s own bus will take you to partner resorts Tsugaike and Iwatake free of charge. This is a great spot for ski slope access, and with some clever shuttle riding you’ll get wherever you need to go. As overnight parking is not available in the area, bringing a car will be difficult.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
Try the cafe just above the Gondola bus stop for delicious croissants and sandwiches in the morning. Cafe 4260 at the gondola base offers hearty and reasonable Japanese ski slope meals – rice bowls, curry and burgers. Recovery Bar and Blizzard are both excellent, vibing apres spots, with Blizzard doubling as an upmarket pizzeria. Downhill from Happo Apartments, especially as you head in to Happo Village, you’ll find more traditional Japanese eateries: try Koiya for soba or Kakuichi for Izakaya pub fare. A 15-minute walk down to Happo Bus Terminal will take you past pharmacies and gift stores, to Happo’s Lawson Conveninence Store. You’ll need to drive 2-3 minutes towards the station for the nearest supermarket, Co-Op.
