Built in 2016, the Bluebird Apartments comprise of two 3-bedroom units with separate entry, one on top of the other. Though light wood panels tastefully highlight the outside, the designers have chosen a cool, chic and neutral aesthetic inside. Grey, black and white interiors abound with simple lines, plenty of dark stone tile and plush grey carpet throughout rounding out the look. Occasional hardwood and granite elements add a tasteful splash of colour.

The layouts for both apartments are identical: you enter via a tiled entrance with a dry room and ski storage room just off to the side (complete with heated boot racks!) The entrance opens up onto an expansive lounge room. Here, full-height windows on two sides showcase Japan’s stunning Northern Alps, with Happo’s ski slopes on full display. There is a dining table with seating for 10, and a full-size kitchen with island counter and a full host of appliances setting you up perfectly for an extended stay. Off the entrance hall are three bedrooms: two have an en-suite bathroom of their own, while the third sits next door to a shared bathroom with bath and shower.

Each Bluebird Apartment sleeps eight guests in existing beds, with the bunk bedroom comfortably housing four adults. Book for 10 and management will set up the two sofa beds in the spacious living room.

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Bluebird Apartments are located in Happo Village, Hakuba Valley’s traditional ski hub and the village closest to Hakuba Station. Happo Village is an eclectic mix of new hotels, old pensions and ancient ryokans and shrines, with plenty of restaurants, shops and onsens dotted around its winding streets. The village centers around the Happo Bus Terminal, which is a 6-minute walk from Bluebird Apartments. The expansive Happo-One ski resort is a short walk uphill through the village.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

From Bluebird Apartments you can walk to Happo-One’s Nakiyama slopes in about 6 minutes, or the Happo Gondola in about 15. Happo Information Center and Bus Terminal (central transport hubs in the Valley) are a 5-minute walk. Property management helps you arrive and depart in resort, and most everything you need is right on your doorstep at Bluebird Apartments. But if you choose to bring a car, there are EV charging ports included in the free parking outside.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Happo village is the undisputed center of Hakuba Valley, and there are plenty of izakayas, restaurants and bars dotted throughout – just be sure to book in advance! Lawson convenience store and Happo Onsen are also both 4 minutes walk away. Should you need groceries, the nearest supermarket is A-Coop near the station, a leisurely 20-minute downhill walk. I stayed here for a few nights and found the apartment very comfortable. There are two bluebird apartments, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs on the ground level. Both have the same design and furnishings. Heaps of parking, walking distance to restaurants and overall the property is very comfortable and fully stocked with everything you need.

I want to stay again. The room smells good and the view from the window on the 2nd floor is beautiful. In the Hakuba collection reasonable pricing.

Although this is a late review, I stayed there in the summer of 2019. Since this is a condominium for wealthy foreigners, of course there are only reviews from foreigners, so I decided to write from a Japanese perspective. I stayed here for 3 nights with my family of 4. In conclusion, it was awesome!

・The owner was very friendly, took great care of me, and was very kind. They communicated with me accurately before I arrived, and I had no problems at all. Even after you arrive, they will explain to you all about the facilities. I feel like this area is often omitted when it comes to overseas condos (lol)

. Facilities are clean and up-to-date. First of all, it was surprisingly spacious, so it was a little too much for the four of us, but my wife was excited to the max (lol). The dishwasher (Miele), washing machine, dryer, bath, TV (Apple, Hulu, etc.), bed (it was comfortable), everything is up to date. What can I say, it has the meticulous cleanliness of a Japanese luxury inn!

・They lent us a BBQ stove, table, and chairs for free, so we were able to have a BBQ in the (large) garden, and it was great to have a BBQ in the cool and beautiful sunset of Hakuba.

・If you have ever been to Hakuba, you probably know that there are many supermarkets and restaurants in the area, so of course you can cook for yourself in the condo, but you won’t have any trouble finding food.

・There is a river flowing nearby, so please be careful when bringing small children to play in the garden. I would love to visit you in winter too!

We were a group of five adults and two toddlers and we stayed at Bluebird apartments for 9 nights. It was fabulous. The apartment is beautifully appointed with plenty of space and terrific kitchen / dining space. The view to the mountains is simply spectacular. The bedrooms are spacious with plenty of wardrobe space and incredibly comfortable beds, vital after a full day of skiing.

Netflix and excellent wifi. Location is great – walking distance into Happo Village, and we even walked to Echoland when we couldn’t get a taxi. Convenience store five mins away on foot and the Tap room two mins away (on foot), for great craft beers and a lovely meal. There is a ski slope pick up and drop off service which we only used once, but we could have taken full advantage of had we wanted to.
Jason has thought of everything to ensure your stay here is memorable. I highly recommend it and we will definitely be back. Thank you Jason!

We have been to Hakuba three times in past years and tried different accommodations. Bluebird Apartment is definitely the best experience. The apartment is spacious with top quality fittings. Great location – walking distance to onsen and restaurants. Hosts are willing to provide extra pick up services when needed. Will be back next year.
