Shochikubai translates to “pine, bamboo and plum” – all symbols of happiness in traditional Japanese culture, and this colorfully decorated lodge will bring you joy in spades. Shochikubai’s two-storey loft ceiling living room faces towards the forests behind, bringing nature right in to every living space.

Living in Shochikubai is centered around the open-plan living, dining and kitchen located on the ground floor. Up to six guests can sit on the recessed dining table, with Japanese style pillow seating bringing a bit of traditional culture to the modern design. The kitchen is full-featured with all the appliances and tools you need to cook up a storm, and a breakfast bar to keep the chef company. There is also a second living area with tatami mat flooring, and this is where you’ll find the flat-screen TV – a clever way to separate screen time from time spent soaking in nature by the fireplace.

Upstairs, you’ll find the three bedrooms – the master bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom, and private access to the extensive terrace balcony. The two additional bedrooms both share a bathroom with separate toilet. Although Shochikubai can house up to six adults, two additional children can also stay on futon bedding in the tatami room: perfect for families. Last but not least, the undercover garage is a welcome addition in one of Japan’s snowiest places. There is also a ski storage room just inside the entrance, as well as a laundry round back – everything you need for self-catered slope-side living.

Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Shochikubai is located in the Kitanomine area of Furano, a short walk from the lifts. It is an idyllic, quiet neighbourhood where you will be surrounded by other low-rise chalets. Shochikubai’s windows and balcony terrace looks out toward the village, while the windows at the back of the building face the forest and mountain behind.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

If you choose to walk, Furano’s nearest ski lifts are about a 10-minute walk North. Furano train station is a 10-minute drive, while the Resort Liner bus arrives to hotels nearby (Naturwald and Prince Hotel) to get you to Shochikubai, with daily services from Sapporo, Asahikawa and Chitose Airport.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Shochikubai is a little removed from Furano ski resort’s main shopping street, with several restaurants about 15 minutes away by foot. Furano Delice, the famous cheesecake shop, is just around the corner and open during the day for coffee or sweets. Or try Bistro Le Chemin, an unpretentious French eatery, 7 minutes’ walk away.

It was my first time visiting Furano in the last week of November 2023 and I had the opportunity to stay here which is one of the most beautiful chalets I ever stayed at and I fell in love with it. This is walking distance to cafes, bars, and restaurants and only 10 minutes walk North to Furano’s nearest ski lifts. Wish I could have gone back. Definitely recommend must book!

We had a really long drive from Hirafu to Furano so we felt so tired. However, it’s all gone when entering the property. It is spacious with unique furniture and large windows along with tatami room where we can lay down while watching TV. The bedroom is so comfortable and I had a really nice sleep after a long day. The next morning, I was so surprised by the sight of pine trees covered in a blanket of snow which is truly enchanting and breathtaking. I really want to stay here longer next time.

Staying at Shochikubai in Furano, Hokkaido was truly a majestic experience. We were treated to a snowfall of around 40-50 cm during our stay, adding to the enchanting winter atmosphere. One of the highlights was the delightful dinner enjoyed with my friends at the Japanese-style dining table, where our feet were comfortably nestled under the floor with the heater, creating a cozy and memorable setting. The big TV set up on the Tatami Room adding more feeling for Japanese style of this chalet!

Our stay at Shochikubai was delightful! I love the sunken dining table and tatami TV room – both perfectly encapsulate the comfort and tradition of Japan – a seamless blend of modern comfort and authentic Japanese aesthetics. The forest views out the back are fabulous – whether you’re enjoying a meal, lounging, or simply taking in the scenery, the view adds serenity. So much serenity ;)
