Mitsui Oil Exploration Co. (MOECO) announced that a steam suppression operation to plug the eruption in its Rankoshi Geothermal Research Area has been completed.
The eruption, which began on 29 June, saw elevated levels of arsenic and hydrogen sulphide in surrounding rivers, a release of tainted water for 19 days till the 17 July completion of a pumping system to divert the flow, road closures and even temporary evacuations for residents in the immediate are during this month’s steam suppression work.
Residents are now demanding answers regarding compensation from MOECO with many farmers worried about selling their crops due to consumer concerns.
MOECO has announced its intention to hold explanatory meetings for local residents, during which environmental measures and compensation will be discussed, the latter on a case by case basis.
