In 2023, the number of foreign residents in Japan rose to over 3.2 million, a record for the country.

Permanent residents are the largest group out of Japan’s foreign residents, at just over 880,000 persons.

Many of these residents were lured by Japan’s labour shortage, underscored by the fact that notable increases were seen in among skilled foreign workers who are able to take on specialised positions without delay.

China, Vietnam and South Korea, in that order, have the highest number of nationals residing in Japan.
