NISEKO NEWS

Niseko experienced its hottest day and month on record this August, according to the data released by Japan Meteorological Agency.

Breaking the previous records set in 6 August 2021 and 8 August 1999 at 34.4C, Kutchan recorded its hottest day since statistics started in 1944 on 23 August 2023, with a temperature of 34.6C.

Kutchan’s average temperature this August was 25.1C, also marking the hottest month on record.

This was significantly higher than the average August temperature from 1991 to 2020, which was 20.6C.

Similar trends were also observed in Rankoshi, which set a record for its hottest day on 23 August, with a temperature of 35.4C, and for its hottest month this August.

Hokkaido overall experienced its hottest summer this year, with an average temperature 3C higher than the average year.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, in addition to global warming, the Pacific high pressure system extended further west than usual this summer.

This unusual pattern caused warm air to continuously flow into Hokkaido from the south, resulting in a record-breaking summer.
