The famous Michelin Guide will release its inaugural hotel rating system in early 2024, and Japanese hotels will be the first in Asia on the list.

The rating system for hotels will be called Michelin Key, distinct from the famous Michelin Star restaurant rating system, but following the same process of determination through anonymous Michelin Guide selection teams, which are currently in the field.

The five criteria for a hotel to receive a Key rating covers architecture and interior design, service quality and the way the hotel adds to the local experience, among other attributes.

Although many hotels are already listed on the Michelin Guide, this is the first time they will be rated in a similar fashion to Michelin-rated restaurants, in a hierarchy of high quality.

The Michelin Guide first launched in Tokyo in 2007, its first foray into Asia, and once again Japan is the debut country in the region for a Michelin rating system.

Michelin Guides have been published by the French tyre company Michelin since 1900 and first focused on the practical needs of the small but growing number of French motorists, like petrol station locations, garages and lodgings.

The Michelin Guide began reviewing restaurants with stars in 1926, finalising its famous three-star system in 1936.

When the Michelin Key hotels are revealed in 2024, they will be listed in the Michelin Guide in print, online and on its mobile application.
