The ground-breaking ceremony was held on Friday for the next major condominium development to open onto the Hirafu ski slopes, Matiè Niseko.

Marketed as “Niseko’s most inspired ski-in, ski-out destination”, the seven-storey condo will sit on prime, blue-chip land in Hirafu’s Upper Village – built on the site of the former Kogen Hotel – with direct connection to the ski slopes for easy access to the Hirafu Gondola station.

Following the ground-breaking ceremony and traditional shinto blessing (pictured below), construction on the project is now officially underway.

Matiè Niseko’s developer is Korean-owned Hanwha Hotels & Resorts, and the property is to be designed by one of the oldest comprehensive architectural design firms in Japan, Nikken Sekkei. Top-tier general contractor, Taisei Corporation, was recently announced as the resort’s construction company.

Partnering with the major Japanese firms, Hanwha says it intends to create a resort true to the look, feel and surrounds of Niseko – a modern interpretation of the Japanese traditional construction methods of ‘Engawa’ and ‘Tsumairi’.

The 120-unit resort will be built on more than 6,400sqm of land, with over 21,000sqm of liveable space across seven storeys, and an underground car park.

Rooms at Matiè Niseko will range from refined studio spaces, to expansive five-bedroom penthouse apartments with views of the iconic Mt Yotei volcano and the surrounding ski resort.

Matiè Niseko promises to deliver comprehensive amenities, including gourmet dining, ski equipment rental, retail stores, a relaxation spa and infinity onsen, private owner lounge and a kids club.

The project is expected to be completed by 2023.
