Hokkaido University has opened its “Wine Education and Research Center” this fall, a first for the prefecture’s growing wine economy.

As Hokkaido Shimbun reports, the centre aims to improve the quality of Hokkaido wine through research, as well as bolstering its profile through wine tastings and eventually a gallery space displaying Hokkaido’s wine history.

Plans are also in place for food pairing events, including rather exotic Hokkaido-centric cuisine like bear and deer meat with wine.

24 Hokkaido University researchers across several wine-related fields are part of the Wine Education and Research Center and experiments regarding grape juice analyses and yeast cultivation are already underway.

The centre will also become the analysis institute for Hokkaido wineries, whose number has swelled to 63 in recent years.
