A Niseko ski lift is retiring for a newer model, and its departure is being marked with festivities and an auction.

Grand Hirafu’s Ace Quad lift (Center 4) will complete its last lap on 31 March after being in operation since 1985 and daily festivities to celebrate its service began on 25 March, with original Center 4 sticker giveaways, DJ performances at Grand Hirafu’s mountain top restaurant Ace Hill and beverages served from noon onward.

On the final day, 31 March, additional festivities include a lottery for prizes as well as fireworks and a special drum performance at 6:30pm at Center 4’s base.

In addition, 30 of Center Four’s lifts are currently being offered for sale as a charity auction which can be entered online, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the environmental advocacy group Protect Our Winters Japan.

According to Grand Hirafu resort, Center 4 is the oldest quad lift in Japan. It is also the first lift many Niseko visitors have ridden upon arrival to the resort.

Its replacement, due to open next winter, will be a more luxurious and faster 10-person gondola.
