130-Year-Old Japanese Farmhouse Becomes Luxury Clubhouse

A reconfigured Japanese farmhouse will take centre stage at The Pavilions Niseko Resort.

Originally built in the Hida Mountains in mainland Japan in the 1890s, the traditional “kominka” structure will become the resort’s clubhouse.

In the process of transplanting and restoring the farmhouse, it has been given a contemporary makeover to bring it up to modern building standards and cater to international tourists.

The Pavilions Niseko  says the clubhouse interior “preserves the understated elegance of traditional kominka style, while iconic plush Scandinavian furnishings warm up the space and bring the comfort of modernity.”

It will include the resort's reception, restaurant, bar, lounge and coffee lounge

The introduction of the old building will be a unique new addition to the Hirafu landscape – such traditional architecture was never built new in Niseko because the area was first settled only about 100 years ago.

The Pavilions’ kominka project concept was introduced by Heritage Homes, a Swedish-Japanese company that finds neglected farmhouses on mainland Japan, dismantles and refurbishes the timber, and then reassembles them for private buyers or developers.

Heritage Homes owner Nils Wetterlind says kominkas are rich in heritage, culture and history.

“Slow-growing Japanese cypress and oak are among the world’s strongest woods, and you can still find wood buildings in Japan that are more than a thousand years old.

“Nowadays, with modern agriculture, depopulation of rural areas and changing lifestyles, many of these amazing buildings stand empty.

“We buy these buildings, dismantle them, expertly renovate them with modern touches, and rebuild them anywhere in Japan.”

As well as the clubhouse, timber from an 1859-built farmhouse is currently being restored in Gifu Prefecture and will become The Pavilions spa and gym, while Heritage Homes is also working on another private home build at Annupuri.
