Description

Offering one of the cheapest and most fun ways to experience Rusutsu, Chise House is a hostel in Rusutsu village located 2.3km from Rusutsu Resort and the ski lift access it provides. For an authentic experience which really does just feel like staying at a local friend’s place for a few nights, this accommodation is perfect for young travellers who wish to engage with local culture whilst getting stuck into some of the world’s best powder snow.

Rusutsu itself has experienced rapid development and growth in popularity over the past few years, and to many, it is still seen as one of Hokkaido’s hidden gems in terms of an international holiday destination. The resort, which is undeniably unique in its quirky, Japanese identity, boasts very short lift lines in comparison to nearby Niseko, and in addition, its lift infrastructure makes a very large area available for visitors to explore on skis or snowboards. With an average snowfall of around 11m over the season, that world-famous Hokkaido powder is extremely reliable, and even at 4pm on a good day, locals and seasonaires alike have been known to find fresh tracks in snow so deep it’ll cover your face.

The guest house is not a modern property, but its facilities and appliances include everything that a trip through Rusutsu might call for. Free wifi is available – essential to check the day’s snow forecast, lift information, onward trip details or simply to post pictures of the stacked snowfall meterage you’ll likely see on Chise House’s doorstep. Ski storage, a shared kitchen and living room area as well as lockers, luggage storage and laundry are all available here. There’s even a small selection of board games and puzzles available to make lazy nights in that little bit more competitive.

Chise House Accommodation

As expected in any low-cost guest house accommodation, sleeping arrangements are limited with a few different options in terms of room type. For large groups a 6 adult family room is available. In addition, a male dormitory room and a standard 4 person room can also be booked – all of which feature Western style single beds. For something a bit different, guests can try a 4 person Tatami room. This features futon beds laid directly onto woven bamboo flooring, and is a traditional form of sleeping arrangement across Hokkaido and the whole of Japan. It’s a cosy way to share a room with friends, and also provides that cultural experience to make your visit that little bit more memorable. All bathroom facilities are shared with other guests.

Chise House Location

Based in the Rusutsu village close to convenience stores (Lawson and Spar) as well as travel links to nearby Lake Toya and Niseko, Chise House is nestled in a very local spot. All-important access to the ski lifts can be found a short way down the main road into the Rusutsu Resort valley, and are easily reached by bus. The nearest airport is an easy 90 minute drive away, and is connected by regular bus and coach links.
