Popcorn Lodge Twin Bedroom | East Hirafu

Once run as a Japanese Pension, this sprawling lodge has been taken over by western masters but retains much of its pension charm. Eclectic furniture from bygone days, a random selection of carpets and mirrors and homeliness pervades this clean and cozy lodge. Paneled glass windows and dark wood sideboards evoke European charm, as do polished hardwood chairs and tables throughout. Communal spaces abound so you can get to know your fellow travellers, or retire to your private room. Decicated air conditioners, TVs and heaters in each apartment ensure your room is just right for you.

The rooms are large, with bedding arranged in single beds, and there are shared bathroom facilities. There is also a ski drying room to leave your stuff ready for the next day’s action. Pensions are built for communal living so expect lots of room and ample shared bathrooms and facilities to accommodate everyone.

Japanese style communal baths are separated by gender, and feature a deep tub to soak the tiredness out of your bones. Breakfasts at Popcorn Lodge are included during the peak season between 28th December and 21st of February – getting you slope-ready first thing in the morning with minimum fuss. The lodge has wireless internet.

Popcorn Lodge
Location

Setting / Atmosphere

Popcorn Lodge is located in the quiet Izumikyo 2 precinct on the outskirts of Hirafu. Lodges and cabins surrounded by snow will be your neighbours, and the noise of Hirafu’s night life is not too close for comfort. Both the Hirafu shuttle (headed for Hirafu Village lifts) and the Hanazono shuttle (headed for the Hanazono ski area) stop regularly a minute’s walk from Popcorn Lodge.

Lifts / Transport

It’s a short shuttle bus ride into the lifts or any restaurants in town. If you miss the last bus home, a taxi back is just ¥500 or a short downhill walk. Your lodge managers will be happy to help you out with a set of wheels dedicated to the property, or if you want to warm up in the morning it’s a 15 minute uphill walk to the Hirafu Gondola.

Restaurants / Bars

The village shuttle stops nearby for a quick ride into town for dinner and drinks. Or explore some of the restaurants nestled in Izumikyo 2 – local favourites Tsubara Tsubara for soup curry, Izakaya Sakae for Japaense style pub fare, or burger boss for delicious burgers just on your doorstep. If the 5 minute stroll to Amaru, the nearest locals’ bar is too far for you, why not stay in the lounge by the log fire and get to know your lodgemates?

Lovely and reasonable. Like all good snow holidays – it’s dependent on the weather: Inches of snow, temperature, cloud, rain etc. All of these can sometimes boil down to luck. Fortunately we had all of these on our side. So our trip was already off to a great start.

This was only enhanced further by our choice of accommodation. Cosy rooms, great location – 1 minute walk to the shuttle bus, and clean communal areas.

A special thanks to T and Steve for making our trip so easy and relaxed. Unfortunately this is their last year running the lodge so can’t comment on if such a high standard will be maintained.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 days at Popcorn Lodge. Steve and Tenille were both such kind and fun people, always around to help, give advice and have a chat. The lodge was very clean, cozy and had a relaxed atmosphere about it. It was about 10 minutes out of the main part of Hirafu, which is actually quite cool because it encouraged me to explore a bit more and get to know greater Hirafu. The dormitory room was a nice layout and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. This was a perfect place for me to stay and I would absolutely recommend it for those looking for a slightly cheaper, yet just as enjoyable, holiday in Niseko.

    Hosts were amazing!!!!
First of all our hosts nicked named Mum and Dad (Tennille and Stephen) by our crew was amazing. They were so helpful, friendly and fantastic at arranging events that lodge guests could attend. We had a mulled wine evening, day trip to Rusutsu, freshly baked cookies! It was just great!

We had a fantastic stay, rooms or cosy, warm and have heaps of space, plugs. Our room even had a mini bar fridge and TV (not that we used the TV).

Beds was comfy and duvets was nice and warm.

In the mornings there was a continental breakfast with scrambled eggs and fresh coffee to top.

Most evenings you’ll find some friendly guests in the lounge area by the fire having a drink or two. All civilised tho ;)

Some rooms have their own bathrooms, ours didn’t and we used a communal shower, even with the lodge full I had no problem finding time to have a private shower.

There’s washer and dryer to use for a ¥100

My pro tips, I over packed. I didn’t need shampoo, body wash or towels, it’s all provided.

Getting to ski fields there is a bus 2min walk from the lodge, we opted to walk to the Grand Hirafu lifts most mornings (10-15min) because we wanted fresh tracks. The bus comes a little to late if you want to do that.

There are a few restaurants close to lodge, Curry Soup Kitchen is amazing!

Thanks again, Tennille, Stephen and Tim we had a great stay!
