Description

Blowhard Japan is one of the oldest chalets in Hirafu, and the first commercial lodge, virtually on the slopes. It has been creatively renovated to retain – and arguably enhance – its rustic mountain hut feel and Japanese heritage, while offering plenty of modern luxury for comfort. The original Japanese owner passed it on to its new owner along with a lot of the furniture, fittings, photos and paraphernalia that he had amassed over the years since it was built in 1962.

Renovated in 2004 with further work done in 2009, the lodge got a wonderfully creative makeover by its new owner, an offbeat architect and designer. As you step in the front door you walk into the large open living area, complete with sunken fireplace lounge in the centre of the room. There’s a beautiful long gnarled timber table in the dining area which is a great place for friends and family to gather in the evenings.

Downstairs is blo*blo bar, a cosy but uber-funky cocktail lounge. The Asian-inspired bar is dark and dingy while being non-smoking, and also has a pole-dancing pole for a bit of fun and entertainment when guests want to jump up and strut their stuff. There is an outdoor fire pit and also usually the Hirafu Ice Bar built created each winter out front.

The on-site manager who lives in the lodge can help you with any issues during your stay, and can even help you book activities and restaurants and more.

Blowhard Japan Accommodation

Blowhard Japan is spread out over fours stories and split levels, and was originally built to accommodate 55 guests. However following it’s remodelling it now sleeps 16 in eight spacious rooms mostly with in traditional tatami (woven straw mat) floor rooms with futons laid out on the floor.

There is one triple tatami room (three singles or one double plus a single) tatami room; two double tatami rooms; four twin or double tatami rooms; and western bunk bed room with just the one bunk sleeping two people. There are three shared bathrooms are shared and breakfast can be prepared for you.

Blowhard Japan Location

The Lodge is almost ski-in/ski-out – just a few steps out of the front door and up the hill and you’re at the base of the Ace Quad chair lift to take you up the mountain, or at the top of the family run from where you can ski straight down.

Straight across the road is the Welcome Centre which is the main bus station for the resort. From here you can get buses in and out of Niseko as well as around town and to the other Niseko resorts.

There are several restaurants within 100m or so walk, including in the adjacent Alpen Hotel. If you’re after a long walk down the hill into the village you’ve got dozens of restaurants and bars to choose from. Just be prepared for the walk back up! Or you can always call a taxi or catch the free shuttle bus all day every day between 8.30am and 9pm.
