The original old pension lodge was brought back to life by a native of Philadelphia in the US, who bought it several years ago and went on to refurbish it in his signature artistic style. He had spent winters during his youth at his grandparents’ chalet at the base of Mt Snow in Vermont, and saw this as an opportunity to recreate that experience – albeit in a much powder-snowier, rural Japanese environment.
The common lounge, dining and kitchen area is warmed by a wood-burning stove, and the cosy atmosphere is accentuated by tasteful wooden feature walls and plush carpet. To finish off the perfect day outside on the mountain, Annupuri Lodge also has its own unique bar – Lucky Fingers – complete with purple velvet walls and comfy lounges.
Annupuri Lodge has nine rooms: four king double/twins (sleeping two); one queen double (sleeping 2); two private rooms sleeping up to five single beds, or three singles and a king double; and two bunk dorm-style rooms.
There is a shared bathroom and there are several incredible indoor and outdoor onsen (hot spring) baths within short walking distance.
There is a communal kitchen for making small meals and a warm, friendly dining and living areas to relax and socialise.
Views are of shirakaba (silver birch) forest and the snowbound village setting. Absolutely beautiful!

LIFTS / TRANSPORT
It’s just a two or three minute walk from Annupuri Lodge to the lifts and gondola, and five minutes to the bus stop which can take you to the other resorts, including Hirafu.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
Of course the lodge comes with the coolest bar in town – Luckyfingers – but other than that there’s not really any “nightlife” to speak of in sleepy old Annupuri. There are a couple of hotel bars, and several izakaya (casual drink/dining) restaurants. Oh, and just between you and me, an amazing pizza restaurant is just across the road – it was commended by Michelin guides… boom!
