Description
Zekkei was one of the first big luxury chalets built in Niseko. Constructed in 2008, the chalet is still well in its prime, with three bold levels of luxury and six large bedrooms – all with en suites. It’s perched on the cliff that bounds the bottom end of Hirafu Lower Village. From here, there’s nothing but rice fields and forest between you and an incredible full-frame view of Mt Yotei. Set down the end of a small snow covered street it’s got a very secluded peaceful feel.

Zekkei is a trailblazer on more than one accounts. This was the first private home in Niseko to feature full, environmentally friendly geothermal heating. It was also the first chalet in Niseko constructed by international resort property developer Zekkei Properties, who also boasts properties in Thailand, Hawaii and China. The company has gone on to build two more properties in Niseko with another major project underway – Elevation, a super luxury ski-in/ski-out gated community in the forest below the Hirafu high-speed gondola.
Zekkei is characterised by huge Canadian-style wood beams and high ceilings. The living area has floor-to-ceiling windows that capture the morning sunlight and invite the views of the snowbound volcanic landscape inside. A huge dining table handmade from Siberian elm is a great place to eat and drink in the evenings, before retiring to the adjacent living room which features three huge lounges, a wall-mounted TV and marble fireplace. There is also another media room with flatscreen TV and DVD.
The bathrooms feature beautiful mosaic tile work with rain shower heads and three Hinoki (Japanese elm) wood baths that give off a beautiful alpine scent. There is also a ski drying room and laundry, as well as a heated six-car garage and the chalet actually comes with one 4WD van during the winter for guest’s use. Zekkei features six bedrooms in total, with five full bedrooms and one children’s room with bunk beds. All bedrooms have en suites and big comfortable beds. The master bedroom upstairs has a Japanese style hinoki bath in the room right next to the window looking towards Mt Yotei – heaven!

Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Zekkei is located at the bottom of Hirafu Lower Village. It’s a quiet location with lots of beautiful properties and snowy vistas around. Built on a bluff bordering the village, the property is ideally poised for gazing out to Mt Yotei on clear bluebird days.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
It’s a long walk up to the centre of the village and the ski lifts, but a short two-minute drive or shuttle bus trip. The property comes with a complimentary four-wheel drive during winter (plus a garage to park it in), so make sure to bring your international drivers license and hey presto – Niseko’s your oyster!
RESTAURANTS / BARS
There are some great restaurants and bars hidden in Lower Hirafu, some of then within a five-minute stroll from Zekkei. If you’re looking for more variety, it’s just a quick drive (or a leisurely walk) to the dining hub of Middle Hirafu.

Where do I start? This was our first visit to Japan and for most of us first skiing experience. We searched the internet and Tripadvisor for suitable lodge accommodation for a group of eight. We wanted a room and en suite for each person, but communal kitchen living room for evening lounging together. . A tough call in Niseko we found. But!…we found Zekkei at a price that was comparable to 8 separate rooms in a hotel. The pictures on the web site and Tripadvisor show all and more than what Zekkei has to offer. The management were simply friendly and did everything we asked them to do in double quick time. When we all walked in the front door, our mouths dropped in awe of this place. Ski room, garage with a supplied 8 seater van for our use, central under floor heating, entertainment room, lounge room with views to die for, bedrooms and bathrooms that are 5 star class, kitchen with everything you can ever wish for present and accounted, clean, polished, wood floors, BBQ….the list simply goes on and on! Zekkei made our stay so pleasurable we simply didnt need or want to go out to bars we had more than we could hope for right there under our feet! The whole day on magnificent ski slopes then back home yes home! to Zekkei!
One tip is to order online grocers from niseko-gourmet, they delivered and stored away in the refrigerator and cupboards for our arrival which wasnt until 11 PM in the evening. We did have a slight hiccup on arrival with no keys to let us all in. But a call to emergency after hours had a staff person retrieve the garage door access code before the frost bite got us all. A minor over sight considering the service we received from the management. They organised our lift passes, and made sure we wanted for nothing. Zekkei is the place to have that luxury experience with family or friends.
