Interestingly, the cabin’s form is inspired by the humble caterpillar, with its twisting, elongated body and raised head at the front above the garage. It is one of a number of modern ski cabins purpose-designed and built for Niseko by a local developer, in collaboration with a Hong-Kong design firm. The idea was to build a range of compact, affordable, mid-luxe chalets that fit in with the local landscape. The interior was designed by a Niseko-based Singaporean designer to give it a cosy, contemporary chalet feel.

True to its “ski cabin” vibe, Yorokobi is super simple inside – rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, dining. Step in through the “belly” of the caterpillar and into a traditional Japanese “genkan” foyer where you can stash your skis and boards and take off your shoes. Step up into the house and on the first floor you’ve got the first bedroom with a bathroom alongside, as well as washing machine tucked away in a cupboard.

Stairs lead up into the living area with views out through the forest to the Niseko Village golf course – of course, buried in metres of deep snow (it would be needle-in-a-haystack stuff trying to find your ball if you teed off in winter!). There is also of course a large-screen TV with Apple TV/Netflix. Behind the kitchen and down a short hall you head towards the second bedroom and bathroom. That’s it! The only other thing you need is your ski pass and a big appetite for delicious Japanese food and you’ve got yourself the makings of a holiday you will never forget.

Rooms

BEDROOM 1

The first bedroom is on the ground floor, just inside the front entrance. There is a bathroom with shower right next to the room which is so close and private you could almost call it an en suite. The room is small and very cosy – perfect for that ski cabin vibe.

BEDROOM 2

The second bedroom is on the second story behind the kitchen/dining area. It also has a bathroom right alongside, while not a true en suite. It has a large wardrobe and floor-to-ceiling windows to capture the snowy atmosphere outside.

Yorokobi Lodge
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Yorokobi Lodge is located just outside Hirafu Village in a quaint little forest-bound hamlet called “St Moritz”. There’s one new hotel at the entrance to the area, and then beyond that a network of small roads with a couple of pensions and a dozen or more standalone chalets.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

It about 1.3km from the closest lift, which will take takes about 10-15 minutes to walk. Rental of the property includes a free shuttle to the lifts and back again each day, and by shuttle you’re just two minutes away. There’s also a garage to park a rent-a-car, which might add a level of convenience to your stay.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

This is a residential area, however there are several restaurants and cafes within short walking distance. Or if you walk or taxi into Hirafu Village just a kilometre away, you’ve got more restaurants and bars to choose from than you’ll know what to do with! Just be sure to book ahead in peak times.

Great for those wanting to be close to Hirafu and have a hire car. We moved in yesterday and the carport is much bigger then it looks in the images as we have a huge 4WD and it fit underneath perfectly. The property is great for 4 guests with one room upstairs and one down. The rooms are cozy so not super huge or spacious. But each one has a bathroom to use and built in wardrobes.

There is an Apple TV, great dining table and built in corner sofa. WiFi is fast but that’s everywhere in Japan.

The views are lovely of the forest just outside and there really are not any close neighbours. I loved the view of the forest from the living room and saw foxes running around the trees so the main window in the living room is wonderful.

The kitchen is fully equipped and all you have to do is stock up on groceries and there is a full size fridge for them.

Overall I really liked this property and perfect for a small group!
