Owl House’s name was inspired by one of the world’s rarest birds and spiritual protector of the area, the Hokkaido owl. In its forest valley setting the name is fitting of its locale. The owl theme runs through the house in various art works and furnishings, adding to the fun and warmth of your retreat.
Speaking of warm, The Owl House was designed with cutting-edge thermal technology, along with superb insulation, heated floors and triple-glazed windows. There’s nothing quite like wearing light clothes and being toasty warm inside with deep snow piled up all around. Eco-friendly heating and water systems mean you can feel comfortable you’re leaving a minimal environmental footprint in this pristine winter environment.
The Owl House is decked out with all the modern comforts and facilities you would expect in modern ski accommodation, with traditional design features reminding you of your location in northern Japan – including a deep “ofuro” bath and shower in a wood-panelled bathroom. Ski storage and drying room will ensure your gear is dry and ready for another day in the powder.

The Owl House
Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
The Owl House is in one of the loveliest locations available in Hirafu. While most of Hirafu is wall to wall chalets and apartments, The Owl House is located in a little valley that branches off the village. A creek runs through the valley and there is just a handful of small chalets down here to share your holiday with. It makes for the essence of a Japanese mountain holiday experience.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
When it comes to skiing, the lifts are a 10-15 minute walk up hill. But most people will prefer to take a set of stairs up into the lower village proper and wave down one of the passing shuttle buses. These are free and come every 10 to 15 minutes to whisk you up to the slopes in no time flat. Jump back on the shuttle at the bottom of the lifts when it’s time to head home.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
As for après, there are a dozen bars and restaurants within walking distance. Be sure to try to get a booking for Ebisutei, Rin and Yo Kaiseki. And you have to drop into the world-famous Fridge Door Bar – that’s right, the one you’ve probably seen in the photos that has a bar fridge for a front door that you have to crouch down through to get inside – you’ll pass it every time you leave the house.
