Sekka Onsen House, also known as Sekka Back Country Chalet, is perhaps the chicest backcountry ski lodge around. It’s located about a half an hour’s drive up beyond Niseko, high up in the mountains and deep in the backcountry. There’s nothing up here except a few old houses, an onsen (hot spring) hotel, a military base and a few soldiers, and a now disused little ski resort.
Which is why it’s surprising to see something of the class of Sekka Onsen House up here. The old house has been be beautifully refurbished in the old-meets-new modern Asian chic style of Sekka. Sekka is the design and development house of creative designer Shouya Grigg. Everything he does exceeds the ordinary, and this house out in the woods is no exception. It’s probably best suited to a group that wants to be away from the resort hoopla, preferring an authentic mountain experience while enjoying a a unique taste of luxury.
The 4-bedroom house can accommodate up to 10 people in designer style. One of the coolest things about the house is that it comes with its own onsen fed by its own mountain hot spring. It also has heated floors, a wood-burning fireplace, full kitchen, laundry, wireless internet, flatscreen plasma TV with satellite channels and DVD player. Don’t forget a ski storage and gear drying room, because no doubt you’re going to be covered in powder at the end of the day out here.
Sekka Onsen House Accommodation
Sekka Onsen House sleeps eight to 10 people in four bedrooms. The house is four storeys including the basement. The basement houses the onsen, laundry and ski storage; the first floor is the living, dining and kitchen; the second floor is the master bedroom with ensuite and small living space, as well as 1 other bedroom; and the top level third floor has another 2 bedrooms.
Sekka Onsen House Location
Sekka Onsen House is located well out of the resort areas of Niseko and there are no shops nearby. There is the odd restaurant within a short drive, but none that you will have heard of before. The ski resort here is closed so it’s backcountry and avalanche safety equipment all the way up here. If you want lifts you’re going to have to go back to the ski resorts about 30 minutes drive away.
Obviously Sekka Onsen House isn’t for everyone. But for others it will be just perfect.
