Description

Sekka Hanazono House is without a doubt one of the most impressive mega-chalets in Niseko. Designed by Shouya Grigg, the man behind the Sekka brand, built this as his dream home in his dream location – isolated from the world near the Hanazono Dairy Farm, just past the ski resort of Hanazono. The expanse of rusted Corten steel exterior appears like a bright orange speck in the widerness when viewed from afar, which is the way Shouya wanted it.

The chalet itself is gargantuan and not like your average holiday home – or even your average home for that matter. At times you’ll feel like you’re walking through a museum of Japanese and modern art. There are 5 bedrooms in various corners of the house, as well as several living and dining areas, a tea room and an office. There is also an incredible range of artwork and statues throughout the house, as well as windows that frame interesting trees and build ups of snow.

The house is split into sections and opens into a long entry corridor with a statue of a Chinese goddess at it’s terminus. Just around the corner is an outside pond, surrounded by floor to ceiling windows to keep out the elements. There is also the tea room and office here. This first section is single storey, but here it steps down, following the terrain of the mountainside to allow for a lower level as well. Here is the kitchen and dining room, with a sunken lounge on one side.

Sekka Hanazono House Accommodation

Sekka Hanazono House has 5 bedrooms and can sleep 10 people comfortably. The master bedroom is on the ground floor just above the sunken lounge. It has an incredible open bathroom with an open air bathtub, and also opens into a courtyard with lovely natural views. The team room across the hall has tatami (woven straw mat) flooring and an adjacent bathroom, so this too can be utilised as a Japanese style bedroom. The remaining rooms are on a mezzanine level above the sunken lounge.

Sekka Hanazono House Location

Sekka Hanazono House is removed from the world, while still being just a few minutes drive from the Hanazono ski resort, from where you can catch lift higher up the mountain to all other Niseko ski resorts. And there’s plenty of incredible powder runs in the resort itself – especially when the lifts from the other resorts are closed and you can have it all to yourself and just a handful of others who have driven out there.

As far as restaurants and entertainment goes, you have either the fantastic traditional old local restaurants in Kutchan town just five minutes drive away, or plenty of modern gourmet restaurants in Hirafu about 10 minutes drive away.
