Puffin
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Puffin is located in the prestigious Escarpment Estate, which is a boulevard running along the bottom of Lower Hirafu village. It enjoys unobstructed views across forests and fields of snow and has a very peaceful, Japanese mountain escape vibe.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

The ski lifts are a long walk up the hill, but can be accessed easily via the free Hirafu Village shuttle which is a five minute walk from the chalet. The other option of course is to hire a car which can get you to the slopes in just a couple of minutes (chalet has carport).

RESTAURANTS / BARS

Puffin is a short stroll to a half a dozen great little bars and restaurants tucked away across the charming Lower Hirafu village, including several of the most popular izakayas in town. About 10-15 minutes walk and you can access dozens more in the middle and upper village.

  1. Avatar for Craig Sampson

    Craig Sampson

We stayed in Puffin for 2 weeks in early March 2019. There was 3 adults and a 3 year old child. This is our second time to Niseko. We absolutely loved the place. Being in the escarpment estate meant that our outlook was straight across snow fields and snow covered trees, rather than into other buildings like in the main village up the hill. Laying on the rug on the lounge floor looking out the huge glass window was a favorite paste time. We even watched the snow foxes walk past most nights. Place was always warm through the heated floors. Great for drying out ski clothes. The Kitchen was great although the combined microwave / oven was difficult to use initially as the display was only in Japanese. Some English instructions would solve this problem. The walk up the dirt access road to the free resort shuttle bus stop may not be ideal for everyone, but as a family we loved it. There was always something new and exciting to explore for our 3 year old. New snow, new icicles, new fox prints, frozen puddles etc.
The full kitchen enabled us to cook most of our own meals which is our preference. We purchased most of our groceries from the Kutchan Town supermarket, which is only a local bus connection away. Very easy. The local supermarkets in Niseko are a good top up of food staples but lack the range and fresh produce from the Kutchan shops.
The only other comment of things to improve in Puffin is that the bedroom doors can be locked from the inside and thee is no way to unlock from the hallway. Suggest the locks be changed to allow opening from hallway if needed. A simple fix which is a key safety issue if you have children.
Would be happy to stay in puffin again next time.
